What Is an Anal Fissure? The anus is the orifice in the bottom of the body via which faeces exits. An anal fissure occurs when the skin in the anus develops a rip or crack. Anal fissures can cause bleeding as well as discomfort. Bright crimson blood may develop in the toilet or on toilet paper after wiping. Fissures can produce discomfort ranging from moderate to severe during and after a bowel movement. Acute or chronic anal fissures exist. Acute fissures, which are more prevalent, can be treated at home using at-home remedies. A persisting problem is a chronic anal fissure, which is not frequent. Chronic fissures may require more intensive treatment from a healthcare provider, including surgery.
